The King's Chambermaid

The setup

For seven days of Harvest Court, the king shares his calendar with a wife who regards him as a treaty rather than a husband. Her chosen messenger is a kitchen servant ordered to help him dress every morning, and the pilot makes clear that the order did not mention how slowly. When a courtier moves to punish her for a clumsy moment, the king stops it with a threat, and she notices that nobody has ever defended her. Before the morning is over he is asking what it would take to see her again, and she names the hour: midnight, turning down his bed. In episode 2 she comes to the room, and the queen is soon knocking.

Why people keep watching

The danger is half the draw: a castle with ears, a wife who hears everything and a servant who would risk the rope for a night. The free episodes keep it to longing and closed doors.
