The setup

Amanda has a gala to attend, a husband stuck at the office, and a stepson who happens to be home. She hands him his father's suit and tells him he is her plus one. At the gala, a couple asks about their history, and she answers for both of them, calling him husband with a straight face. He stares at her all night, and she has been counting. The pilot ends at a hotel room the father booked for the two of them, with Amanda announcing that he is not coming. In episode 2 she tells him to keep pretending, and his protest, that she is his dad's wife, meets the reply that his father is working all night.
