Dad's New Girlfriend

The setup

Colette is seeing the narrator's father, and she carries that fact about as lightly as a coffee order. Episode 1 begins over a splash of milk, with a joke about how high a tip can go and a direct look that gives the line a second meaning. In episode 2 a customer at her counter wants her number and gets shut down: she is off the clock, and he can take his tip elsewhere. The narrator watches that go down, then runs into her afterward. She jokes about her daily admirer, he admits he would understand the habit, and she tells him to climb in, because his father will be gone a good while.

Why people keep watching

Nothing in the plot is complicated: a girlfriend, her boyfriend's son, an empty house. What keeps you watching is how casually she plays it. The pilot is open to anyone, and the early episodes tease far more than they show.
