Courtney's Secret

The setup

Looking for a clean slate, he rents a house in an unfamiliar city on a street where every neighbor seems eager to say hello. The landlord, Jamie, shakes his hand. Jamie's wife, Courtney, does the real welcoming: she catches him watching her, offers to carry his things and ends up with soap on him, all with her husband standing right there. A voiceover hints that somebody ought to be nervous, and it is not Courtney. In episode 2, with Jamie at work, a neighbor named Nicole stops by to say hello. She has heard plenty about the newcomer already, and she has a small errand he could help with. The friendliness starts to feel organized.

Why people keep watching

The hook is hospitality that begins to feel scripted. Everyone is warm, everyone knows a little too much about him, and the free episodes keep to flirtation, soap, small talk and doorway chats while the whole street seems in on something.
